Chris Joris: percussion, piano
When looking at the most famous jazz musicians from Belgium, you can’t ignore percussionist, composer and pianist Chris Joris. Joris has been experimenting with different types of instruments and ethnic music for more than 45 years, in order to create his own style. His music can mainly be described as a combination of jazz and world music. With great passion, Joris has released several CDs in his musical career, toured in and outside Europe, including with his band Chris Joris Experience, and carried out numerous projects; solo or with other musicians. And this with success: he has won several awards for his work, including that of the Best Flemish Artist in 1998.
Eknath Erwin Vann: tenor sax and flute
As a composer and arranger, Eknath Erwin Vann wrote music for big band (The Brussels Jazz Orchestra), hip hop (Krewcial, DJ Grazzhoppa’s DJ, Big Band), soul (Moiano) and for chamber orchestra in a project with the Belgian rock band Venus. From 2002 to 2005, he collaborated with the Canadian choreographer David Pressault on several of his projects, creating electronic music and music for saxophone solo and live electronics. He has also composed music for film and TV. The documentaries “Traces/Empreintes de femmes” and “En attendant les hommes”, both by Katy Lena Ndiaye (Neon Rouge), received several awards at international film festivals.
Sal La Rocca: double bass
Since the 1980s, Sal La Rocca has been an indispensable part of the Belgian jazz scene. Throughout his career, he played with several big names from both the national and international scene such as Lee Konitz, Mal Waldron, Jacques Pelzer, Steve Grossman, Randy Brecker, Richie Beirach, Philip Catherine, Toots Thielemans, Dani Klein… In 2017 and 2018, Sal La Rocca played several concerts with two famous French musicians: Jacky Terrasson & Stéphane Belmondo (with whom he had played before, in 2003 and 2005) in a quartet with the young and talented Belgian drummer Antoine Pierre. In 2003, he released his first album Latinea. Sal was then the official bassist of singer Anne Ducros until 2007, when he became bassist of the pop rock band Vaya Con Dios. His second album ‘It Could Be The End’ was released in 2013, with a number of original compositions, and his third album ‘Shifted’ was released in 2018.
Lauriane Ghils: Malian harp and percussion
Lauriane Ghils is a percussionist and composer. She grew up in a musical family in Belgium where her mother (Spanish-African) played djembe and sang and her father (Belgian) played Indian sitar. At the age of six, Lauriane started playing the piano, and at the age of 15 she started percussion lessons with the well-known teacher Osvaldo Hernandez; here she learned to play Latin American (including congas and bongo) and West African percussion (djembé and dunun) with several teachers. At the age of 17 she spent 9 months in Brazil where she organized a musical project for children with learning disabilities. Lauriane studied for 2 years at the Jazz Studio Antwerp and completed a master’s degree in Latin Percussion at Codarts Rotterdam. Lauriane has taken lessons with Zoumana Dembele, Babara Bangoura, Gerardo Rosales, Nils Fischer, Lucas van Meerwijk, Chris Joris and Martin Verdonk, among others. She also played with Shirma Rouse and Kim Hoorweg at North Sea Jazz Festival. A perfect concert to leave 2024 and look forward to 2015!!!
