FR : Le Marni Jazz Festival n’est pas un festival comme les autres. Il se déroule sur plusieurs jours (comme la plupart des festivals) mais ne propose qu’un seul concert par soir et ceux-ci sont dédiés spécialement à un instrument. Cette année, c’est la contrebasse qui est mise à l’honneur. Cinq concerts se succèdent entre le 14 et le 22 septembre. Commençons par les trois premiers.

EN : The Marni Jazz Festival is not a festival like any other. It takes place over several days (like most festivals) but only offers one concert per evening and these are specially dedicated to an instrument. This year, the double bass is in the spotlight. Five concerts follow one another between September 14 and 22. Let’s start with the first three.

FR : Le 14 septembre, Sal La Rocca et son quintette (le SLR5 New Band EX) ouvre les festivités. Dans le beau et chaleureux théâtre, la totalité des strapontins sont occupés.

Depuis quelques temps, Sal La Rocca semble vivre une seconde jeunesse. Il s’est entouré de musiciens de haut vol de la « jeune génération » (entre guillemets), tels que Maayan Smith au sax ténor, Igor Gehenot au piano et Umberto Odone aux drums. Et pour équilibrer l’ensemble, il peut compter sur son vieux complice, Phil Abraham au trombone. Pour l’occasion – et comme c’est aussi la tradition du festival – il a convié, en plus, le très jeune et très prometteur guitariste Eliott Knuets à venir épicer un peu plus encore sa musique.

EN : September 14, Sal La Rocca and his quintet (the SLR5 New Band EX) open the festivities. In the beautiful and warm theater, all the folding seats are occupied.

For some time now, Sal La Rocca seems to be experiencing a second youth. He surrounded himself with top-flight musicians from the “young generation” (in quotes), such as Maayan Smith on tenor sax, Igor Gehenot on piano and Umberto Odone on drums. And to balance everything, he can count on his old accomplice, Phil Abraham on trombone. For the occasion – and as is also the tradition of the festival – he also invited the very young and very promising guitarist Eliott Knuets to come and spice up his music a little more.

FR : Entre thèmes plutôt hard bop et swinguants (« Not Rated ») et grooves soutenus, on ne s’ennuie pas un instant. Le contrebassiste présente chacun des morceaux avec beaucoup d’humour et autant de dérision. Chaque musicien y va de son solo : attaques franches du sax, entrée en sensualité qui monte en intensité du trombone (glissando et légers growl). La guitare alerte de Knuets intervient, elle, par petites touches, insufflant ici ou là une pointe de soul supplémentaire. A la batterie, le drive est impeccable. Après deux solides morceaux en quintette, on se retrouve à trois (sax, dm, cb) le temps d’un « You Wouldn’t Say That », façon blues un peu décalé et sax déviant. Ensuite, il y a ce thème dédié à sa belle-maman, intimiste et introspectif mais surtout très touchant et très émouvant.

EN : Between rather hard bop and swinging themes (“Not Rated”) and sustained grooves, we never get bored for a moment. The double bassist presents each piece with a lot of humor and just as much derision. Each musician goes with his solo: frank attacks from the sax, entry into sensuality which increases in intensity from the trombone (glissando and light growl). Knuets’ lively guitar intervenes in small touches, injecting here and there a touch of additional soul. On the drums, the drive is impeccable. After two solid quintet pieces, we find ourselves in three (sax, dm, cb) for a “You Wouldn’t Say That”, a slightly offbeat blues style and deviant sax. Then, there is this theme dedicated to his mother-in-law, intimate and introspective but above all very touching and very moving.

FR : Le contraste est fort, ensuite, avec le joyeux et entrainant « Ritornello » où chacun s’amuse. Sax et trombone se complètent à merveille : à la fois moelleux à l’unisson et plus tranchants lorsqu’ils se répondent l’un l’autre. Igor Gehenot, fidèle à lui-même injecte du groove ou soutient avec lyrisme les sorties de Sal qui, la plupart du temps laisse beaucoup de place à ses compagnons, à l’exception de quelques solos ou d’intros qui propulsent généralement le groupe dans des courses haletantes. Le dernier morceau, tendu jusqu’au bout, sonne comme un baroud d’honneur et, en rappel, « Freedom Of Thought », aux accents soul bop et afro-cubain met un point final à un concert impeccable et plein de bonne humeur.

EN : The contrast is strong, then, with the joyful and lively “Ritornello” where everyone is having fun. Sax and trombone complement each other wonderfully: both mellow in unison and sharper when they respond to each other. Igor Gehenot, true to himself, injects groove or lyrically supports Sal’s outings who, most of the time, leaves a lot of room for his companions, with the exception of a few solos or intros which generally propel the group into breathtaking races. The last piece, tense to the end, sounds like a last stand and, as an encore, “Freedom Of Thought”, with soul bop and Afro-Cuban accents, puts an end to an impeccable concert full of good humor.
