EN : Born from drummer Arnaud Cabay’s deep love for the repertoire of what is now called the “Great American Songbook,” this project, alongside the trio’s piano version, stems first from a desire but also from a simple observation: jazz, unlike popular music, shuns its great classics in favor of a constant search for novelty. While musicians love to compose and push the boundaries of what is “already heard,” creating a unique sound and identity, these three, if they listened to themselves, could spend the rest of their lives reinterpreting the music they grew up with.
The trio offers a repertoire through which they can share the unique emotions felt when listening to their heroes, a repertoire too often relegated to the jam session, yet which has produced the most important recordings of 20th-century American music and revealed the full diversity of possibilities in performance. Let the music play!
FR : Né de l’amour profond du batteur Arnaud Cabay pour le répertoire de ce qu’on appelle aujourd’hui le « Great American Songbook », ce projet, en parallèle avec le la version piano du trio, démarre d’abord d’une envie mais aussi d’un constat simple : le jazz, à l’opposé de la musique populaire, boude ses grand classiques au profit d’une recherche constante de nouveauté. Si les musiciens aiment composer et repousser les limites du « déjà entendu », créer un son et une identité inédite, ces trois-là, s’ils s’écoutaient, pourraient passer le reste de leur vie à réinterpréter les œuvres de la musique avec laquelle ils ont grandi.
Le trio propose un répertoire à travers lequel ils peuvent partager les émotions uniques ressenties à l’écoute de leurs héros, ce répertoire trop souvent relégué au rang de la jam session et qui a pourtant produit les enregistrements les plus importants de la musique américaine du XXe siècle et révélé justement toute la diversité des possibles en matière d’interprétation. En avant la musique !
