gentSal La Rocca Band

friday 12 july 2013 / Gent Jazz Festival
Sal La Rocca (double bass) Erwin Vann (tenor saxophone), Lorenzo Di Maio (guitar), Jozef Dumoulin (piano) en Hans van Oosterhout (drums)
Initially briefly interested in guitar rock, Sal La Rocca discovered the jazz genre in the early 1980s.He traded the guitar for the bass and taught himself the jazz idiom, inspired by the model of Paul Chambers. La Rocca tirelessly built on his abilities as a musician, and it did not take long before he was noticed playing alongside Toots Thielemans, Philip Catherine, Nathalie Loriers, and Dani Klein (Vaya Con Dios).
Despite his numerous recordings as a sideman, it was not until 2003 that his debut as bandleader was marked with the release of Latinea. We then had to wait almost ten years before his second album, ‘It Could Be The End’, appeared last year under the IGLOO label.
The compositions are strongly melodic and yet allow sufficient freedom to the other musicians he has collected about him.
