FR : Le contrebassiste Sal La Rocca, à la tête d’un nouveau quintet, propose huit créations originales qui constituent un terrain de jeu renouvelé pour ses solistes, dans un style qui peut globalement être qualifié de post-bop. Le morceau en ouverture de l’album, Consenso, séduit illico par son thème obsédant tandis qu’au premier espace libre, Steven Delannoye s’emballe sur son saxophone soprano. Il est suivi par le tromboniste Phil Abraham qui adopte une méthode différente, plus serpentine et sensuelle, avant que le morceau n’évolue vers une ambiance hypnotique via une motricité rythmique inédite calée sur un riff de basse qui maintient la tension jusqu’à la coda. Voici un superbe morceau qui déborde d’enthousiasme et d’émotion spontanée. Cette formule gagnante est reprise sur d’autres titres, chacun avec ses propres accroches. Si Delannoye reste au soprano sur le fougueux No Entiendo, c’est au ténor qu’il explose sur Freedom Of Thought, partageant la ligne de front avec le tromboniste Phil Abraham et le pianiste Igor Gehenot. L’esprit est résolument collectif et l’oreille est captivée par les passages de relais entre instrumentistes ainsi que par la richesse du dialogue contrapuntique. Introduite par un long solo de contrebasse, cette composition exemplaire, qui témoigne de la saisissante cohésion de ce quintet, est un des pics de l’album.

Le répertoire comprend aussi quelques morceaux plus posés comme Song for RB, doté d’un solo de contrebasse et d’un bel arrangement qui n’est pas sans évoquer l’esprit des grands albums Blue Note des années 60, ou Forgotten Life avec son thème lyrique qui s’étale longuement puisque cette composition n’inclut aucun solo. Enfin, citons encore Ritornello qui débute comme une pièce de musique de chambre avant de s’ouvrir sur une ravissante envolée de saxophone. Par la qualité des compositions et des arrangements, ses improvisations collectives ou solistes, et le plaisir de jouer qui transpire derrière chaque note, cet album s’impose comme une écoute à la fois jubilatoire et fascinante.

EN : Bassist Sal La Rocca, leading a new quintet, presents eight original compositions that offer a fresh playground for his soloists, in a style broadly described as post-bop. The album’s opening track, Consenso, immediately captivates with its haunting theme, while in the first free space, Steven Delannoye launches into a blistering soprano saxophone solo. He is followed by trombonist Phil Abraham, who adopts a different, more serpentine and sensual approach, before the piece evolves into a hypnotic atmosphere through a novel rhythmic drive anchored by a bass riff that maintains tension right up to the coda. This is a superb piece brimming with enthusiasm and spontaneous emotion. This winning formula is repeated on other tracks, each with its own unique appeal. While Delannoye remains on soprano saxophone for the fiery “No Entiendo,” it’s on tenor saxophone that he truly shines on “Freedom Of Thought,” sharing the stage with trombonist Phil Abraham and pianist Igor Gehenot. The spirit is resolutely collective, and the ear is captivated by the interplay between instrumentalists as well as the richness of the contrapuntal dialogue. Introduced by a lengthy double bass solo, this exemplary composition, which testifies to the striking cohesion of this quintet, is one of the album’s highlights.

The repertoire also includes some more subdued pieces such as “Song for RB,” featuring a double bass solo and a beautiful arrangement reminiscent of the great Blue Note albums of the 1960s, or “Forgotten Life” with its expansive, lyrical theme, as this composition includes no solos. Finally, let’s mention Ritornello, which begins as a chamber music piece before opening with a delightful saxophone flourish. Through the quality of its compositions and arrangements, its collective and solo improvisations, and the sheer joy of playing that shines through in every note, this album is a truly exhilarating and captivating listening experience.
